A mural honoring England and Barcelona footballer Keira Walsh has been completed in her home city of Greater Manchester.

Rochdale-born Walsh’s striking image is painted on the R-Kix Performance Center on Smith Street in Rochdale.

Manchester-based street artist Katie Scott painted the mural last week and said she enjoyed painting it.

“People were all very welcoming and stopped for a chat as the work progressed,” she said.

“It’s nice to know that people of all ages are enjoying it and I’m really happy to have played a part in celebrating Keira’s story and hopefully inspiring the next generation of young girls.”

Walsh grew up in Rochdale and first played football with her father on a field opposite her home on Syke Common.

She later joined Pearson Juniors before being signed by Blackburn Rovers and later Manchester City.

Since moving to Barcelona, she has won La Liga, the Supercopa and the Champions League – and lifted England’s first ever Finalissima women’s trophy.

She has won numerous accolades for club and country, including multiple Champions Leagues, English and Spanish league titles, the 2022 UEFA Women’s Championship and is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of her generation.

The mural was installed by Rochdale Borough Council in partnership with its agency Rept Sports and Rochdale Development Agency (RDA).

The council said the recently opened R-Kix Performance Center was a suitable location for the arts as it offered football pitches, coaching, fitness and other sports facilities in the city centre.
