Village goes to harvest pine trees

Muani village in Kadavu is about to start harvesting pine trees.

This follows the arrival of forest harvesters.

The Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries said a total of 16 vehicles and heavy machinery were unloaded, supported by a 30-man logging crew.

The forest harvesters of logging companies Drelaga Holding Ltd and Burning Bush Pte Ltd were unloaded on the banks of Muani Village via Genesi Shipping Barge Services last Friday.

Pine harvesting is carried out by the Fiji Pine Trust with government support for inland shipping subsidies through the Commercial Maritime Pine Subsidy.

Meanwhile, work on the forward road to the Muani Pine Scheme has begun.

Work on Muani Port is expected to be completed this week, with only 10 meters remaining to complete the causeway.

The proposed loading date is set for June 1.
