Unknown viral outbreak authorized by Santiago de Cuba authorities in two municipalities

The Provincial Directorate of Health in Santiago de Cuba released an information note this Monday recognizing an increase in the number of reports of patients with unspecified fever syndromes. According to the statement on Facebook, the cases were reported in the municipality between May 12 and 18 Songo-La Mayaas well as in the Carlos J. Finlay And Ernesto Guevara De la Serna health areas, both located in the main municipality.

The clinical picture of the patients is characterized by headache, fever, general discomfort, loss of appetite and muscle pain, the note said. It noted that eight patients have been admitted so far, all of whom showed a favorable evolution “with resolution of the clinical picture between the fourth and fifth day of the disease,” and that no cases of such severity have been reported.

In addition, it was stated that samples were sent to the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine to conduct investigation and determine the cause of this event. “Due to its evolution and epidemiological pattern, it is consistent with a disease with a viral etiology,” the report said.
