CHENNAI: With the southwest monsoon likely to begin in the last week of May and the Met department issuing heavy rain warnings to several TN districts, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has directed district health officials to take all necessary steps to ensure preparedness.

In an official circular to all DHOs, the directorate has directed them to ensure adequate presence of health workers in hospitals 24 hours a day, including rapid medical response teams.

The availability of emergency medicines, IV fluids, vaccines, beds, backup generators and fuel must also be ensured, it added.

Antenatal mothers in flood-prone areas should be identified and admitted before delivery. Hygienic food, drinking water and proper sanitation must be ensured in all rescue centres, the circular said.
