MoE plans to decentralize school counseling services – FBC News

The Department of Education has recognized the increasing number of indiscipline cases referred to the Substance Abuse Advisory Council over the years.

According to SAAC, 3,500 drug-related cases involving students were recorded last year, compared to 2,400 cases in 2021 and 2,800 cases in 2022.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro says there is an urgent need to decentralize school counseling services to the four divisions.

Radrodro says that in light of the changes that have affected their operations, the ministry has worked with the Government of Australia to set up counseling centers across the country.

The counseling centers are located in Nasinu Secondary School, Levuka Public School, Natabua High School and Labasa College.

The Minister acknowledges that there are limitations in their efforts to deal with every case of indiscipline as the hubs are located in urban areas and thus depend on the availability of support to deal with cases of indiscipline in rural areas.
