Busiest day expected at Sea-Tac Airport

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and about 3.5 million people are expected to fly this weekend.

At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, TSA expects to screen more than 70,000 people on Friday alone.

TSA expects more people will fly this year than last year, by about 10%.

It is always recommended to ‘arrive early’ at the airport, but this weekend it is highly advisable as there is still a significant amount of security in place.

Security Checkpoint 3 remains closed as construction crews add two more lanes. However, the airport should have other security checkpoints open.

TSA Projects agents will screen more than 365,000 people flying out of Sea-Tac Airport this holiday weekend. Whether you’re flying or dropping off or picking up at the airport, you can expect some traffic jams. According to the Port of Seattle, the busiest times are from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m., then again from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If you are taking the Light Rail to the airport, please note that there is still limited service between Seatac/Airport and Angle Lake Stations and limited service between Stadium and Seatac/Airport stations. This is for a maintenance project that Sound Transit is working on until the end of June.

FOX 13 spoke with some travelers on Friday morning about their experiences at the airport. Some said they were at the airport three hours before their flight.

“I travel here for work, and it’s horrible, I hate it,” said Alex and Jade, as they traveled back to California. “We got here three hours early because I knew it was going to be a super long line.”

“About an hour and a half, an hour,” said Andrew, a traveler from Seattle. “A little risky, but we’ll be fine.”

Some tips from TSA to ensure your travel plans go smoothly:

Be prepared: make sure you have your photo ID and boarding pass ready so you can show it to the agent

Pack smart: double check that there are no liquids in your carry-on luggage as this will slow you down in line

Tag your luggage: Many bags and suitcases look the same, so make sure you have a luggage tag or tag on hand so you can quickly find your bag in the sea of suitcases

As always, it is advisable to arrive early, at least two hours. Just to give yourself time to get through security. It is normally recommended that you use the SEA Spot Saver feature if you do not have Clear or TSA Pre-Check. However, travelers told FOX 13 Friday morning that it was unavailable and fully booked. The best option is to get to the airport early to make your flight.
