Old Rahul video ‘proves’ Congress supports quota for Muslims, says PM Modi | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Modi on Monday doubled down on his charge of ‘communalism’ against the Congress and its partners by citing a video of Rahul Gandhi allegedly supporting reservations for Muslims.
“Today I came across an 11-12 year old video of Congress shehzade showing support for reservation for Muslims. The then Prime Minister repeatedly said that Muslims had the first claim to the country’s resources, and on the other hand we said the Shehzada, who controlled the government from a distance, aggressively claimed that Congress would make reservations for Muslims. This has exposed the real character of the Congress,” Modi said in Bengal.
Have come up with evidence that Cong is against a faith-neutral constitution: Prime Minister Modi
This (old video of Rahul allegedly supporting Muslim quota) has exposed the true character of Congress that the party and its ecosystem have been hiding, Modi said while addressing an election rally in Jhargram in West Bengal.
In the video, Rahul appears to be attacking Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of his ally Samajwadi Party, for going above and beyond the Muslim quota despite having served as UP CM three times. “The media asked him about quota two or three times, but the response was met with complete silence. Congress, on the other hand, openly talks about reservations. Manmohan Singh says: yes, we will make reservations for Muslims, we will include them. And then Mulayam Singh stands up and says they would have done more (if they had been in office). But you were in power three times, why didn’t you do that?” Rahul says in the video, apparently during a public meeting.
For Modi, who has been accused of “communalism” for saying Congress plans to extend quotas to Muslims in violation of the Constitution’s ban on religion-based quotas, the video proved an effective weapon for his counter-offensive ; his attempt to turn the “common” charge on its head.
“The media kept questioning me about this and said their manifesto makes no mention of Muslim quotas. Now I have come to you with evidence showing that the Congress and its partners are leading communists and opposed to the faith-neutral Constitution, are casteists and nepotists. said an angry Prime Minister who also accused the media and the ‘ecosystem’ of saving the Congress for a long time.
“I caught them and exposed them daily with proof of their communalism, casteism and nepotism and now they cannot escape being punished by people,” Modi said as he appealed to his audience against the “attempt” to rob SCs . STs and OBCs from part of their quota.
Earlier, in an interview with news agency PTI, the Prime Minister said that he had never spoken a word against minorities and that the BJP had acted against them “not just today but ever”. However, he made it clear that he was not prepared to accept anyone as ‘special citizens’.
Asked about the concern among minorities over his statements, Modi said, “I have not spoken a word against minorities. I am only speaking against the vote bank politics of Congress. Congress is working against the Constitution, that is what I have said.” Modi said the makers of the Indian Constitution, including BR Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru, had decided that there would be no reservations on the basis of religion. “Now you turn away from that. It is my responsibility to expose them. At that time there were no members of my party in the Constituent Assembly. It was a meeting of eminent people from across the country,” he added.
Modi focused on the promise in Congress manifestos of a share for minorities in the award of government contracts and public procurement. ‘You want to build a bridge. Who will register for the tender? Someone with resources, expertise and technology. But if you also want to make reservations there, what will happen to the development of my country?’ he asked.
