Hot air balloon celebration at Lake Malone State Park

When I was a kid, we had several swimming spots that were “on rotation,” so to speak. On a Saturday we would choose Windy Hollow Lake; the next Miller Lake. Then it would be Fish & Game. And of course we were not averse to leaving Daviess County altogether.

Lake Malone was always a nice location for a day of picnicking and swimming. It’s still in 2024, but it’s been growing since I was little (if I ever was). And it continues to do so. The Big Twigs were an inspiring addition and always make for a fun day in the park.

Too bad our twig friends can’t look up or they could enjoy the grand 100th anniversary celebration of Kentucky State Parks at Lake Malone State Park. Balloon flights will take place. I can’t think of a more beautiful area to see from the air than Lake Malone.

The party starts Saturday, June 29 at 4 p.m. with guided walks, a bouncy castle, a dunking booth, free books and toys provided by SOAR, and a book signing. This will be followed by birthday treats and tethered hot air balloon rides over the lake from 6pm.

An extraordinary balloon glow ends the evening at 8 p.m.

If you plan to attend, bring lawn chairs, bug spray, and sunscreen, and if you’re worried about food, don’t worry. There will be plenty of food trucks available.

Multiple centennial celebrations will take place across the Commonwealth to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kentucky State Parks. You may be able to make more than one, but you definitely don’t want to miss this one.
