An unlicensed driver from Mexico was arrested for driving under the influence after a crash on US 301 in Sumter County.

Victor Manuel Frias Araiza, 29, of Lakeland, was driving a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder shortly before 11 p.m. Friday when he was involved in the crash on U.S. 301 near County Road 472 near Webster, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report. Frias Araiza was identified from his Mexican passport and appeared to have been drinking. An investigator confirmed that Frias Araiza never obtained a driver’s license in the United States.

He agreed to participate in sobriety exercises, but his poor performance led the investigator to conclude that he had impaired driving skills. Frias Araiza provided breath samples that registered blood alcohol levels of 0.194 and 0.184.

He was initially taken to the freestanding emergency clinic at UF Health-The Villages Hospital in Brownwood for a medical evaluation. After he was acquitted, he was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center for driving under the influence and driving without a license. He was released after posting $1,500 bail.
