Rain helps farmers to start agriculture related activities

Kurnool: After the pre-monsoon rains, farmers are preparing for planting crops like cotton, groundnut, redgram, chilli, onion etc. in the district.

Agriculture officials are processing requests from farmers to distribute seeds on a subsidized basis. Cotton is grown on about 6 lakh acres in the district and groundnut on about 1.50 lakh acres.

So far, 432.8mm of rain fell, compared to the normal 597.6mm from June 1, marking a 28 percent deficit. The normal rainfall in the district is 614.7 mm during the season.

In the hope of sufficient rain this season and a good yield, farmers have shown extra interest in growing dry crops. The district administration imposed a ban on paddy cultivation last year due to shortage of rainfall and to prioritize drinking water needs.

This year, however, farmers are optimistic about good rainfall during the southwest monsoon and hope they can grow rice as usual. Currently, the climate is ideal for farmers to start preparing for sowing.

A farmer, K. Maddileti from Adoni, said he will start working on his 20 acres of land for groundnuts and cotton this week. He expects a better yield due to the favorable weather conditions.

Joint Director of Agriculture PL Varalakshmi said farmers in the district have started their farming activities. They have been advised to register for the supply of subsidized seeds at the nearby Rythu Bharosa Kendras.

The department plans to provide seeds to farmers at a 40 percent subsidy. During the season, cotton cultivation is prominent and officials prepare to supply genuine seeds and check the sale of fake BT seeds, as has happened in the past.

Farmers sow cotton on 2,44,000 hectares, groundnut on 59,000 hectares, chilli on 30,000 hectares, red gram on 25,500 hectares and rice on 12,770 hectares during the Kharif season. The total estimated area this year is 4.19 lakh hectares.

Rough calculations indicate that 3 lakh tonnes of fertilizers, including DAP, urea and other complexes, are required in the district for the Kharif season.
