Punjab resets summer vacation due to heat wave: List of states where summer vacation dates have been changed due to rising mercury

Summer holidays 2024: Several states in India are experiencing intense heat waves. Therefore, state governments have announced the early start of summer vacations for schools in these states to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The decision applies to both government and private schools.

The heat wave hitting these states is part of a broader weather pattern affecting several parts of India. According to AIR, the Meteorological Department had predicted a heat wave in the regions of Punjab, Haryana-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch on May 18. These regions experience rising temperatures, often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. , which poses significant health risks, especially for young children. As a result, summer holidays in these regions have been rescheduled. Here is the list of states where summer holidays have been announced earlier than usual.

PunjabSeveral districts of Punjab are witnessing rising temperatures. Bathinda recorded the hottest day on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 46.4⁰C. In view of the situation, the Punjab government has postponed the start of summer holidays. Initially, the holidays were to start from June 1. However, due to the extreme weather conditions, the holiday period has been changed and now runs from May 21 to June 3.

Similarly, the Haryana Directorate of School Education has announced that all government and private schools in the state will observe summer vacation from June 1 to June 30, 2024. This notification was issued on May 17 and circulated to various education authorities, including district education officers. and heads of schools. The directive also noted that both government and private schools will reopen on July 1, 2024.

In Rajasthan, the Education Ministry has declared a summer vacation starting from May 17 and lasting till June 30 for all government and private schools. The department has issued strict instructions to schools not to conduct additional classes during this period.

In the national capital, Delhi, the academic calendar had already scheduled a summer vacation starting on May 11 and ending on June 30. The decision is in line with the city’s annual academic schedule.

Madhya Pradesh has also adjusted its academic calendar in response to the heat wave. As per the guidelines of the State Education Board, the summer vacation for all government and private school students started on May 1 and will continue till June 15.
