NEW DELHI, May 20 (BBC): Northern India, including capital Delhi, is being hit by a severe heatwave with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius this weekend. On Sunday, Delhi’s Najafgarh district recorded a temperature of 47.8 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country this season.
According to the weather bureau, the heat wave is likely to continue this week. The scorching heat comes as India holds its general elections, the results of which will be announced on June 4.
Indian summers, which extend from March to September, are usually hot and humid. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the country is likely to experience longer and more intense heatwaves this year.
On Saturday, temperatures crossed 45 degrees Celsius at 10 locations in the National Capital Region (NCR), which includes Delhi and some districts of neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
