This Tennessee Cave Tour leads to a huge waterfall

The highest underground waterfall can be found in a cave in Tennessee.

My husband and I love visiting the mountains and caves of Tennessee. With nearly 10,000 known caves in the state, Tennessee is the cave capital of the United States. My husband and I recently went to Chattanooga for the weekend and had a blast. Rock City was absolutely incredible (although Rock City is technically in Georgia), and then we went to a cave that led to a beautiful waterfall.

Nearly a century ago, in 1928, Leo Lambert explored Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he accidentally came across something incredible: an underground waterfall. According to Ruby Falls, Leo named the waterfall after his wife Ruby. How romantic is that? My husband has yet to name a waterfall after me. Anyway I digress, there is a lot to do in Ruby Falls as here you will find Lookout Mountain, underground cave adventures, beautiful views of the Cumberland Plateau, zip lines and of course the most incredible sight: the tallest underground waterfall in the world . United States.

My husband and I had to go to Ruby Falls and if you are ever in the Chattanooga area you have to take a tour! You’ll take a glass elevator 80 meters down into the cave and then embark on an hour-long tour of an incredible cave system with enormous formations. The best part, however, is at the end when you see Ruby Falls, the tallest underground waterfall in the United States.

While there’s never a bad time to check out Ruby Falls, if you plan your trip after a rainstorm, you can expect a special treat: a really strong waterfall. According to our guide, we chose the perfect day to explore the cave because Tennessee had just gotten a lot of rain, so the waterfall was extra powerful that day. When they turned on the lights so we could see Ruby Falls, I can honestly say it was breathtaking.
