Derbyshire 362 and 261-9: Chappell 72; Keogh 5-62

Derbyshire (12 points) drew with Northants (13 points)

Anuj Dal blocked Northamptonshire’s path to victory as Derbyshire emerged with an unlikely draw in the County Championship Division Two match in Derby.

Northants were on course for a first win of the season at tea as Derbyshire crumbled to 149-7 chasing an unlikely 371 for victory, but Dal’s unbeaten 31 from 139 balls denied them.

Zak Chappell played a big role with 72 in a stand of 108 in 32 overs with Dal and although Rob Keogh took 5-62 with his off-spin, Derbyshire held on to close at 261-9.

Northants had declared at 310-3 after scoring 115 from just 13 overs in the morning thanks to Karun Nair’s unbeaten 153 and 55 from Emilio Gay.

Derbyshire needed a substantial partnership to have any chance of chasing the runs but saw captain David Lloyd dismissed for 15.

Brooke Guest was caught driving Liam Patterson-White, who then took an excellent catch as Wayne Madsen made a great slog sweep off Keogh.

That marked an alarming decline with four wickets falling to the spinners for just 17 runs in nine overs.

When Ross Whiteley turned Keogh’s last ball before tea into the hands of the front short leg, the visitors came close to victory but were frustrated by the resolute hitting of Dal and Chappell.

Patterson-White finally made the breakthrough when Chappell chipped to midwicket and Blair Tickner survived 21 balls before Keogh bowled him.

Although Northants claimed a second new ball, they could not break Dal’s resistance as Derbyshire emerged from a thrilling final with a spirited draw.
