The following announcement was made by Spectacle Collective:

Spectacle Collective presents Sounds of the Andes, an evening of musical fusion with the Alturas Duo and Gonzalo Cortés, on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 7:30 PM at First Parish of Watertown.

Alturas Duo consists of Carlos Boltes on viola and charango and Scott Hill on guitar and vocals. They are joined by Gonzalo Cortés, Andean woodwinds and Western flute for a seamless blend of Western classical music with South American folk music. The audience is invited to reimagine well-known classics while discovering a whole new sound world. The trio will introduce audiences to a variety of Andean and classical instruments and share insights from their extensive experience with the folkloric oral tradition of the Andes.

Spectacle Collective is a nonprofit performing arts organization based in Watertown. The group brings classical music and other art forms into conversation to create multidisciplinary performances and reach a broader audience. Their previous production, Dmitri in the Dark, included a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 6 with acrobats and actors.

Sounds of the Andes is a precursor in support of Spectacle Collective’s upcoming main stage production Luz & Leyendas at the Boston Center for the Arts, October 18-20, 2024. Luz & Leyendas will feature the Latin American folk music-inspired compositions of Gabriela Lena Frank and Javier Farías, performed by the Spectacle Collective string quartet and Alturas Duo, alongside live shadow puppet artistry that will draw you into a whimsical, dream-like atmosphere. Both performances are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
