Who is the Topeka area HS Athlete of the Week for May 13-18?

TOPEKA — The Topeka area performed extremely well in the penultimate week of the high school sports season. Regional championships and state appearances showcased the city’s wealth of talent.

Vote for the Capital-Journal’s Athlete of the Week for May 13-18. Voting closes at 12 noon on Thursday. These are the nominees:

Makayla Ekis, Washburn Rural softball

Ekis was the starting pitcher in Washburn Rural’s 8-1 victory over Maize in the regional championship on Thursday. The senior threw a complete game and allowed only six hits and one run in the win. Ekis struck out two batters as the Washburn Rural defense rose to the challenge of helping Ekis perform well.

Finn Dunshee, Hayden athletics

It was a flawless regional championship for the sprinter. Dunshee broke three school records on Thursday. He won the 200 meter sprint with a 21.64 and broke his own record in the 100 meter sprint with a 10.69. Dunshee played a role in the 4×100 as he helped Hayden break that school record with a 42.49.

Kate Hinck, Washburn National Football

The junior was on fire on Thursday, especially in the first half of the regional championship game. Hinck scored four goals in Washburn Rural’s 8-0 win over Wichita East. All four of her goals came in the first half, as it included the perfect hat trick. She scored twice with her right foot and fired a volley with her left shoe. The best goal came from a corner, in which she shot a header into the net.

Kira Lowrey, Silver Lake softball

The junior played for Silver Lake. She hit a triple down the right field line in the final inning of the regional championship game against Santa Fe Trail on Wednesday. Lowrey’s triple set up McKinley Kruger for a walk-off bunt. Lowrey made a great base run and scored the only run of the game to put Silver Lake over Santa Fe Trail, 1-0.

Nate Plankinton, Topeka High baseball

The senior was stellar in Topeka High’s 2-1 regional championship win against Derby on Tuesday. Plankinton threw 6.2 innings, gave up five hits and struckout six batters. His pitching performance allowed the Trojans to win back-to-back regional titles.

Avery Walz, swimming sailor

The senior’s performance earned Seaman third place with 147 points in the Class 5-1A state championship. She took second place in the 200 meter IM and the 100 meter freestyle. She also played a role in Seaman’s runner-up finish in the 200-meter individual medley.
