Ukrainians hold their ground in the battle for the most important city in the Kharkov region – POLITICO

Syniehubov added that the Russian offensive, which began on May 15, had largely destroyed the city.

Russian troops captured several towns in Kharkov oblastbut not the regional capital itself, when their invasion began in early 2022, before Ukrainian soldiers repelled them in May 2023.

Moscow’s attempt to retake the province comes as opinions in the West over how to support Kiev grow increasingly divided and Ukraine’s military efforts falter due to troop shortages and a lack of ammunition.

At least 1,500 Russian troops have been killed since entering the Kharkiv region, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The battle lines in Vovchansk are now the two banks of the Vovcha River that bisects the city, the region’s governor Oleh Syniehubov told Reuters.

On Monday, Russia also attacked a lake resort in the region, killing at least 11 people and wounding many more, Ukrainian prosecutors said.
