The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing a wide receiver that the Kansas City Chiefs recently released from their roster. The Steelers have now made some roster moves at Wide Receiver this week after a disappointing performance for the unit at OTAs.

The Steelers released former New York Jets second-round pick Denzel Mims earlier this week. Mims would sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars a day later. As previously discussed on GH, according to Mark Kaboly with The AthleticMims was one of several wide receivers the Steelers tried to fit into the WR2 role at OTAs:

The Steelers have not emerged with a clear No. 2 receiver option during the voluntary portion of OTAs. He thinks Van Jefferson is currently the second option:

At this point I would say From Jeffersonbut honestly you can Watkins, Patterson, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Marquez Callaway And Denzel Mimsthere too. Yes, it’s not a good situation, and the Steelers know it. It would show a lack of awareness and urgency if they don’t add a legitimate No. 2 before the season starts. And I think they will.

The Steelers are expected to add more help at receiver in free agency or trade. San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk is the favorite target of fans and analysts for the Steelers.

With Mims’ roster spot open, the Steelers announced on their website that they had signed Jacob Copeland to a one-year contract:

Copeland spent time on the Steelers practice squad during the 2023 season.

Copeland originally signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL Draft. He was released by the Titans and later signed with the Minnesota Vikings during training camp. Copeland was released prior to the start of the regular season. He also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason

Copeland played at the University of Maryland in 2022, where he caught 26 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns. He spent four seasons at the University of Florida, where he had 86 receptions for 1,366 yards and nine touchdowns.

Copeland was released by the Chiefs in early May, before mandatory minicamp. Copeland has experience with the Steelers, but no experience with the current group of quarterbacks. Copeland will get passes from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in training camp instead of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky.
