BROOKHAVEN – The Lincoln County Board of Supervisors could take little action beyond a few infrastructure updates and an agreement to house city inmates at the jail. Currently, Brookhaven pays $35 per day per city resident.

Supervisors approved an updated interlocal agreement to house city inmates at the county jail.

Greg Malta, attorney for the Lincoln County Board of Directors, said housing costs will now reach $50 per day per city resident. The agreement has a term of one year and was approved by the city on May 15, 2024, according to the document.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said after a meeting in March that city residents became the responsibility of the county once they were turned over to a grand jury. The new interlocal agreement states that an inmate remains a city inmate until charged with a crime. This will change how many days Brookhaven is charged for housing city residents.
