The Weekend Leader – Red Alert issued for four districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rain forecast

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has issued red alert in four southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The weather department on Monday said Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Theni and Tenkasi will be placed under red alert for the next two days.

The forecast also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places in Virudhunagar, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Dindigul during the same period.

The RMC statement also said that heavy rains will hit parts of Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thoothukudi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Myladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the south-west of the Bay of Bengal on May 22, which may turn into a depression over the Bay of Bengal on May 24.

Nine teams of the Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Kanniyakumari, Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli districts of the state due to very heavy rains. -IANS
